They look harmless, mostly old, very polyester and married with their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows and learns between Abra Stone, The True Knot is almost immortal and they live off the ‘steam’ that children with the ‘shiny’ produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the residents of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent a gruesome childhood, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to lose his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism and violence. Eventually, he settles in a city in New Hampshire, an AA community that sustains him, and a job in a nursing home where his remaining ‘shiny’ strength offers the dying the greatest comfort. Helped by a far-sighted cat, he becomes ‘Doctor Sleep’. Then the fleeting Abra Stone encounters it, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest glitter ever seen, that revives Dan’s own demons and calls him to a battle for Abra’s.
